This beautiful holy card was printed in France at the turn of the last century. It is based on a statue of Our Lady of Africa in Algiers, Algeria, where a giant Basilica exists dedicated to her. Because Our Lady of Africa is not based on a particular apparition, but instead on the devotion of Catholics, she has many shrines in Africa.
One of them is "Our Lady of Africa, Mother of All Graces," a Marian Shrine at Abidjan, in Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast). In 1988, St. John Paul II said of the shrine that Mary is "an African woman, the loving Mother, everywhere near each of her sons and daughters." The current rector of the Shrine, Fr. Adingra, reminds us, "God uses us like Mary, to be providence, that is, to be there to give."
